Some of the most well known words that Jesus spoke were “…upon this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.” (Matthew 16:18b).
Jesus died to build His church and He was quite clear how that was to be done. It wasn’t to be accomplished through church programs, worship or preaching styles, but it was to be done by going “into all the world and preaching the gospel.” It was by this directive that He would build the church. In this post I want to define what the church is and give you four truths about the church.
The Church Defined
First off understand that the word church as used in the Bible does not refer to a building or a denomination. The Greek word for church is “ekklesia” and it means an assembly or congregation of people. It is not a building. The building would be the tabernacle or sanctuary. The church is the people who gather. This church is both “universal” in other words world wide and it is local.
The Foundation Of His Church
The foundation of the church is Jesus himself. There is no other rock or cornerstone upon which the church can be build or established.
The Authority Of His Church
The authority of the church is also established in Jesus. It was an authority that was promised to the apostles and to us today. When Jesus told Peter he would give them the “keys of the kingdom” He was speaking of authority. Those who have keys have authority. The apostles were promised the power to bind and loose whatever the Word of God promised.
The Ultimate Victory Of His Church
The assurance of victory of His church is found in the words “the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” No matter what power or forces Satan may bring they will never prevail or have victory over His church. No matter what Satan does his plans and schemes will never succeed in destroying Christ’s church.
We Can Share In The Ultimate Victory Of His Church
The assurance of sharing in the victory of Christ’s church is found in Ephesians 6:10-13. When the Believer puts on the full armor of God we are able to also stand against the attacks of Satan. Satan is the adversary of every Christian and his desire is to destroy them. But God has promised that nothing shall separate us from the love of God. In all things we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us!
Christ is building a church. It is a group of people who love Him and worship Him. We are promised His victory is our victory. Live in the victory of Christ and His church.
